Sant Balbir Singh Ji Seechewal
is popularly known in India and abroad as Sarkan wala Baba (the Saint
of the Roads). It is due to his great work in preparing roads in different
areas of the state of Punjab, which generally remain neglected by the state
agencies.
Immediate occasion for the
initiation of this monumental work arose on the birthday of Guru
Nanak Dev Ji in 1991. On that day a large religious procession was
organized.**
Sant Ji found that it was
difficult for the people to pass over paths and roads, which were covered
with mounds of sand and he made up his mind, then and there, to level the
mounds and prepare the paths.. Thus, the great task of smoothening and
clearing of the roads began on that very day.
But this was not the only factor that
inspired Sant Ji to take this decision. The real motivation came from his
religious faith, from his philosophy of life. According to him, whatever
divides man from man is irreligious, and whatever joins man with man, or
with his environment, is truly religious. So the task of building roads, for
him, was a great religious task. Ways are necessary not only for achieving
every worldly goal, but also to achieve God. Roads join the holy places. If
they are smooth and clean, it becomes easier for us to arrive at our
destination. Our sages and saints have greatly stressed the importance of
paths. Today, when all sorts of means of road transport have come into
being, the significance of roads has immensely increased. Wise people say
that to remove a thorn from a path is a great virtue just equal to
Ashwamedh Yagya.. But it is ironical that today the thorny trees are
being planted on the roadsides.
In
the view of Sant Balbir Singh Ji, as we clean our houses, we should also
clean the roads to our houses. Just as we keep our temples, gurdwaras,
mosques, churches and offices neat and clean, it is also our duty to keep
our roads clean. When the farmers remove the weeds from the fields, they
should not throw weeds on the roadsides. By taking these precautions, we can
keep the roads of the whole world neat and clean. We can beautify the roads
by planting flowers and fruit trees along them. That is why Baba Ji promptly
made up his mind and he never looked back, once he had embarked upon the
preparation of roads. Till date a large network of thousands of kilometers
of roads has been installed in the whole area to the great facility of the
public.
Building of roads was not an
easy task.
It involved a lot of
difficulties. But slowly and slowly the difficulties were won with the grace
of God. Baba Ji’s opposition by the narrowminded people subsided with the
passage of time. The truth won at last. As a result, more and more people
came to join Sant Ji's mission. Panches and sarpanches of the area played an
active role in motivating and mobilizing the people.
Later on when Baba Ji took over
the task of cleaning and renovation of the pious Bein, his
experience in making roads was of great use to him. He had to face same kind
of problems. The tools, which he devised for making roads, were also useful
in his work on the Bein. Roads continued to be made on the banks of the Bein.
Work of the village roads was also not stopped. But now respect for Baba Ji
became firmly fixed in the minds of the people. The opposition to his work
on the roads and other such developmental work subsided gradually.
The gursangat of whole area
cooperated with Babaji in the work of repairing Sultanpur Lodhi Talwandi
Chowdharian Road and Lohian Malsian Road during the months of August &
September this year.
